Doctoral Research Position in the Field of Viral Ecology
The research group of Prof. Kirsten Küsel at the Cluster of Excellence “Balance of the Microverse” at Friedrich Schiller University Jena is seeking a PhD Researcher in Viral Ecology in the context of the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Centre 1768 “VirusREvolutionExternal link: Decoding tools for virus research”, starting in December 2026.
In this doctoral project “Do viruses exploit their quasispecies for host range evolution?”, the candidate will investigate how host range and environmental conditions shape virus diversity and virus–host interactions in natural and experimentally manipulated microbial communities.
Position: Part-time (65%), limited to 30 June 2030

Postdoctoral Research Position in the Field of Metagenomics
We have an open 2-year postdoc position starting in October. We are looking for highly motivated person with in depth bioinformatic experience in metagenomics analyses of soil or groundwater data analyses. In addition, you should have a great publication record.
