Matthias Schleiden Institute of Genetics, Bioinformatics and Molecular Botany

Director: Prof Dr Stefan Schuster

Homepage Matthias Schleiden Institute

Research at the Matthias Schleiden Institute is done in the spirit of Schleiden: with a focus on cells, in an interdisciplinary way and questioning dogmas. In the areas of General and Molecular Botany, research at the institute is done on light-regulated  processes and the circadian clock in the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and on the secondary metabolism of algae and their interactions with bacteria, among other topics. In Plant physiology, the symbiosis between plants and fungi under normal and stress conditions are in the focus. Genetic research in the institute deals with transcription factors controlling flower development, with mechanisms of gene regulation in Bacillus subtilis and other topics. Bioinformatics studies include mathematical modelling and computer simulation of biological processes such as metabolism and host-pathogen interactions. Numerous projects have an interdisciplinary character, for example, the mathematical description of the complexity of fatty acids and polyketides, computer simulation of circadian rhythms and of the nitrogen metabolism in algae or the application of game theory in molecular and cell biology.

The Matthias Schleiden Institute of Genetics, Bioinformatics and Molecular Botany has three working areas:

  • Genetics (Prof Dr Günter Theißen)
  • Bioinformatics (Prof Dr Stefan Schuster)
  • Molecular botany (Prof Dr Maria Mittag)
Institute of Microbiology

Director: Prof Dr Erika Kothe

Homepage of the institute

Microbes interact in highly complex organismic associations through the continuous exchange of chemical signals. These signals are often, but not solely, low molecular weight compounds produced by one partner and taken up and decoded by another (e.g. as attractant or repellent, as a pheromone for induction of sexual development in fungi, for quorum sensing in biofilm generation, for parasitic or mutually beneficial symbioses etc.). Chemical communication thus is the basis for the generation of homo- or heterogenic organismic interactions, e.g. with plants in the rhizo- or phyllosphere, with animals or man, or in multitrophic consortia in soil. Therefore, it is essential to unravel communication processes at the cellular level in detail which is possible using microbes as model systems. The spatial and temporal distribution of interacting networks will provide insight into microbial consortia and their interactive networks which will lead to applications, e.g., in nature conservancy (by elimination of contaminants), in agriculture (to improve yield and allow for higher stress tolerance), in medicine (biosynthesis of antiinfectives) or for biotechnological applications (like using quorum sensing in production of natural compounds for pharmacy of nutrition), just to name a few.

The Institute of Nutritional Sciences was established in 1990 and is now part of the Faculty of Biological Sciences. Research at the institute is on various aspects of nutrition, including nutritional toxicology, nutritional (bio)chemistry, nutritional physiology and nutrigenomics, as well as basic and applied human nutrition.

Major research areas include

  • the development, prevention and intervention of diet-related diseases such as cancer, obesity, diabetes, atherosclerosis
  • (patho)physiological and (patho)biochemical aspects of micronutrient homeostasis and macronutrient metabolism (including fatty acids, dietary fiber and others)
  • age/aging-related alterations in diet and metabolism.

Approx. 500 students are enrolled in the Bachelor's and Master's programmes in Nutritional Sciences offered at the institute.

Institute of Pharmacy

Director: Prof Dr Dirk Hoffmeister

Homepage of the institute

Pharmacy is a multidisciplinary, natural scientific discipline. The academic training of future pharmacists, as well as research on new active agents and drugs are the main focus at the chairs of the institute of pharmacy. A successfully completed course of studies in pharmacy at a university, which has been passed with a state examination, enables the issuances of the approbation, which is the prerequisite for work that is performed independently and with personal responsibility within various areas of activity. The websites of the institute provide information about admission requirements for a study of pharmacy, the content of teaching, the occupational profile of a pharmacist and about the institute and the staff itself.

The Institute of Pharmacy consists of:

  • Professorship of Pharmaceutical Biology (Prof Thomas Winckler)
  • Professorship of Pharmaceutical Microbiology (Prof Dirk Hoffmeister)
  • Professorship of Pharmaceutical / Medicinal Chemistry (Prof Oliver Werz)
  • Professorship of Pharmaceutical Chemistry (Prof Gerhard Scirba)
  • Professorship of Pharmazeutical Technology and Biopharmacy (N.N.)
