Courses, lab rotations, and Master's theses
The VEO group is actively involved in teaching across several Master’s degree programs at FSU Jena, including Microbiology, Bioinformatics, and Molecular Life Sciences. Our teaching activities cover a broad spectrum of topics, ranging from fundamental bacteriophage biology to the analysis of complex viral communities and their interactions with microorganisms and the environment. A central element is the Viromics module, offered in the summer semester. This module is divided into an experimental and a bioinformatics component, providing students with hands-on experience that reflects the full breadth of expertise within our research group.
In addition to structured courses, we offer student internships (lab rotations) throughout the year. The content of these internships is closely aligned with ongoing research projects in the VEO group and allows students to gain practical experience in experimental, computational, or integrated approaches. Lab rotations also serve as an important orientation phase for students considering a Master’s thesis within our group. Master’s thesis projects can be initiated at any time upon request and may be purely experimental, purely bioinformatic, or a combination of both, depending on the student’s interests and background.
