New Publication Ernst Haeckel Correspondence Vol. 14

The second volume of Ernst Haeckel's official correspondence is dedicated to his institutional environment. As director of the Grand Ducal Zoological Museum from 1862, he expanded the collection and established a worldwide network.

His growing offer of professorship and his tireless commitment to the popularisation of the theory of evolution given reasons by Charles Darwin and the implementation of a scientific world view provided him with financial donations of astonishing proportions, among which the Paul von Ritter Foundation for Phylogenetic Zoology, used for research trips and new scientific positions, stands out. As a collator of scholarship foundations, Haeckel supported the next generation of scientists who established evolutionary biology at other universities, museums and schools. The building of the Phyletic Museum, which was completed in 1908 and supported by substantial donations from his supporters and patrons, remains a landmark of Jena to this day. Finally, with the foundation of his "Villa Medusa", he succeeded in establishing an institute and museum which, as the "Ernst Haeckel House", was to be dedicated to the History of the Theory of Development and thus also to his own work.
