This assessment report reviews the role of genome editing metaphors in the Biological Sciences. The aim is to understand the historical genesis of these metaphors and to analyse the transformations they are currently undergoing. On this basis, it will be shown what meaning effects they have in scientific and public discourse - whether these are intended effects or unconscious linguistic processes. Metaphors not only introduce new perspectives into the sciences, but also mask aspects that lie outside the visual field of metaphorical description. A historical and systematic approach makes it possible to create a greater awareness of these blind spots that arise in scientific discourse due to the specific imagery of genome editing.
