We are thrilled to announce that VEO-MGX graduate Ernestina Hauptfeld has been awarded the BioSB Young Investigator Award! This prestigious award, presented by BioSB, the national community for bioinformatics and systems biology research in the Netherlands, recognizes exceptional PhD research conducted at a Dutch institute as well as contribution to the Dutch bioinformatics community. Ernestina was chosen by the committee due to the scientific excellence of her thesis, as well as her outstanding commitment to education at Utrecht University.

She was presented with the award on May 13th at the BioSB conference 2026. To further mark the occasion, she was invited to give an honorary lecture with the title "Nature's Clean-up Crew: Bioremediation through a Metagenomic Lens" about selected projects from her PhD work and a sneak peek into what she is currently working on. We are very proud of Ernestina and look forward to our continued collaboration in the future!
